2) "Allergy" -- As to seasonal allergy alˇlerˇgy Pronunciation: 'a-l&r-jE Function: noun Inflected Form(s): plural -gies Etymology: German Allergie, from all- + Greek ergon work -- more at WORK 1 : altered bodily reactivity (as hypersensitivity) to an antigen in response to a first exposure <a bee venom allergy so severe that a second sting may be fatal> 2 : exaggerated or pathological immunological reaction (as by sneezing, difficult breathing, itching, or skin rashes) to substances, situations, or physical states that are without comparable effect on the average individual 3 : medical practice concerned with allergies 4 : a feeling of antipathy or aversion Pronunciation Symbols The word "allergy" was coined by the Viennese pediatrician Clemens von Pirquet in 1906.[1] Pirquet noted that some of his patients were hypersensitive to normally innocuous entities such as dust, pollen, or certain foods. He called this phenomenon "allergy", from the Greek words allos meaning "other" and ergon meaning "work".[2] Allergies were thought at first to be caused by an improper activation of the antibody class called Immunoglobulin E (IgE). But it later became clear that several different disease mechanisms were implicated, with the common link being a disordered activation of the immune system in one or another of its many pathways. A new classification scheme was designed by P. Gell and R. Coombs to reflect what were then rebaptized hypersensitivity reactions. The word "allergy" was then restricted to Type I Hypersensitivity, which is caused by the classical IgE mechanism. Type I Hypersensitivity is characterised by excessive activation of mast cells and basophils by IgE, resulting in a systemic inflammatory response that can result in symptoms as benign as a runny nose, to life-threatening anaphylactic shock and death. Allergy is a very common disorder and more than 50 million Americans suffer from allergic diseases. Allergies are the sixth leading cause of chronic disease in the United States, costing the health care system $18 billion annually. - 1 Signs and symptoms
